The waste land in
psychological approach.
- Preface
As we studies
about modernist literature in T.S.Eliot, Virginia Woolf, Ezra pound, Samuel
bucket, James Joyce, Huxley, and Orwell etc. modernist literature in we see
that urbanization, spirituality,
culture, science, war, industrialism etc. we find that in this characteristic
in T.S. Eliot poem ‘The Wasteland”, it is modern epic. We know that the modern
period in literature may be said to extend from the 1920s. And how world war
sees in many novel, poetry, drama etc.
This period many literary and cultural movements in Europe, America, and
Brittan were influenced. In literature many of terms and theory have helpful
and how a context gives different look of text. Here terms are structuralism,
psychological, biographical, colonialism, cultural studies etc. So now explain that T.S.Eliot works ‘the
wasteland’ and see that to psychological approach. And how according to
Freudian theory, sexual feelings, hysteria and how Eliot relations to his wife
and male friend Jean Verdenal. And Eliot’s personal experience and it
is reflected in the poem. So now we see in psychological thinks found in his
poem “The wasteland”.
- About Poet T.S.Eliot
He was born in a prominent
Unitarian Saint Louis, Missouri family. He is inspired and spiritually motives
of his grandfather and modernity his father. (Bloom, Biographical Sketch) Eliot literary career
in Britain, following the curtailment of a tour of Germany by the outbreak of
World War I. His most of the work in spirituality, culture, religious, nothingness,
world war, conscious mind, relationship etc. In 1922, Eliot’s most famous poem ‘The
Waste Land” published. At that time his life goes that stress and emotions
of his wife and death of his friend Jean Verdenal. At that time he composed
during a period of enormous personal difficulty for Eliot and his ill-fated
marriage to Vivien Haigh Wood was already foundering. Both he and Vivien
suffered from precarious health ‘The Waste Land’ offered a bleak portrait of
post-World War and how image of Europe. He broadened his knowledge of contemporary poets and poetry, including the
poetry of Ezra Pound. And who would shape of ‘The Waste Land’. He also met the
poet and novelist, Conrad Aiken his fellow student. (Bloom, The Story Behind the
Story)
Eliot bio-graphic is very important and look at different context of his life.
And we know that Eliot life is so bad at that time his wrote ‘The waste land’.
And His unfulfilled desire and unhappy of married. So now we look to
psychological context in the waste land and how reflected in Eliot life.
- What is psychological approach?
It is studies of human mind
and behavior. Here we can say that psychological studies about why author and
poet wrote this kind of poem or works? And how his connections of their life
and his behavior. It is mantel process and we know that observation of his
personality, why we behavior this? This
terms given to Sigmund Freud’s ideas and how look that to person and what he do
that as consciously? It is consider of unconscious mind, individual and human
activity of observes them. So we know explain that The Waste land” in psychological context of Eliot life and why he
gives five parts and what means of this poem? And what connections of his life
and wife? What is relationship between his friends Jean Verdenal? So now we
studies about the waste land in psychological studies.
- The waste land in psychological approach
In psychology has a study about human mind and how their life has good
and bad. It is terms and Freud ideas of interpretations of dream analysis. We
find that ‘The waste land” in
collage of the poem and it setting of time and how spiritual, cultural,
nothingness, sexuality, death and life etc, themes in this epic poem. Freud
gives three combine to form one personality and each character represents one
aspect of personality. (Brenner) This three at that
time of came of human being may be problems and good them.
In poem the waste land observation of Tiresias character,
myths, religious, spirituality and nothingness of land. We know about that Tiresias
has man and women both of them. In psychological reading why Eliot use this
characters? We can say that sexual perversion of other. It may be that female
and men both have relation in one character. In first part “The Burial of the Dead” in we see that Eliot memory
and desire of childhood. As psychology has to observers and negosious of his
childhood, and spirituality it is grandfather gives ideas. his consciousness of
remember in this poem lines “And I will show you something
different from either your shadow at morning striding behind you or your shadow
at evening rising to meet you: I will show you fear in handsome of dust”. (Eliot) In deep observations of “Memory and
desire” is problematic and how poet himself that gives image of season. According
to Freudian psychology based critical analysis. And meaning of the text ‘The
Wasteland’ encompasses the psyche and consciousness of author and poet. The
wasteland as stating that the sibyl form mythology was hanging in cage. She
speaks that “I want to die”. It
means that Freudian theory and expounded in psyche mind of Eliot. And he divine
of this adheres to the Freudian principle of death drive also know as a death
wish may be. And we should be what she wanted retorted them. When Eliot desire and
memory drifts back to times in Munich, to childhood sled rides and to a
possible romance with a "hyacinth girl”. It may be that Eliot mind in myth of hyacinth girl. Their sexuality
of neither men nor women.
The waste land then in life and image of world war and London
city. Here we see that in poem Themes river referred that. Eliot’s Freudian
thought that to waste of mind and nothingness in land. In their fertility of
land. It means that ego of narrator has know about every thinks. Psychological
distress in life of Eliot and bad experience of them. In Biographical read of
Eliot life exhausted, depress, hypochondriac and psychotic mind of him. In poem
“A
Game of Chess” in difficult and found that Eliot struggle of
sexuality.
And Eliot not happy with his married life. How he not satisfied of his wife Vivienne
Haigh-Wood. . In lines “In vials of ivory and colored glass, Unstoppered,
lurked her strange synthetic perfumes, Unguent, powdered, or
liquid--troubled, confused And drowned the sense in odors; stirred by the
air , That freshened from the window, these ascended”. In poem
sexual relationship, trust and love, man and women relations of there. And in
poem see that Two women conversions. In poem women life and image, beauty of
women as in man attracted. And their taught about her personal life and
thinking of her husband.
How their life and night are bad, no any attachment of reality. In Freud’s theory, we see that Eliot unconsciously image of this women. Maybe say that Eliot relationship of his wife, sexual desire, consciousness, feeling and emotions of his wife.

How their life and night are bad, no any attachment of reality. In Freud’s theory, we see that Eliot unconsciously image of this women. Maybe say that Eliot relationship of his wife, sexual desire, consciousness, feeling and emotions of his wife.
In poem part “Death
by Water"in Eliot remember, love, and salvation of his friend ideas.
It is refers that Eliot sexual relationships and death of his close friend Jean
Verdenal. We see this lines word it is of his friend and dead forget the cry of
gulls of Verdenal. “Phlebas the Phoenician a
fortnight dead forget the cry of gulls, and the deep sea swell and the profit
and loss”. In poem death and life
itself theme but we see that death is carried out from the beginning to end of
the poem. Eliot used the circumstances and the emotions of his own life to
invent and give vitality to images which were partially drawn from his own
experiences and yet reflected a world broader than his own private one. Freudian
ideas of ego are Eliot and how he rusticated of His wife. A psychological study
has to alter ego the textual representation of a creative author or poet’s
self. In poem life and death is a symbol. This symbolizes is enhanced when
handsome and young man of Phlebas in consider of them. That means his friend
Jean Verdenal death. As psychological read of Eliot personal life it may be
problematic. And we know that state of mind regarding a life of memories.
In poem many scene of Thames
daughter passage is different violation and stagnation of sexuality. As we know that human mind always conscious
and Eliot make them to reference to him at Margate sands. It means that being
able to connect nothing with nothing and the broken fingernails of dirty
hands. It may be possibility of Eliot
life and shame at facilitating an empty sexual union. The Waste land poem in word Hysterical,
prophecy and resultant enigmatic are women. We see that nervous state of Eliot
mind and affrication of women. Hysterical women are illness and disordered talking
is the sickness cured.
Here we see that ambiguity and subconscious mind as sexuality identity in poem. In poem “What the Thunder Said” in landscapes and silence solitude of women. In poem biblical. Religious, Indian Upanishad concept see in the poem. Datta means what we given? It may be that blooded shaking his heart and awful humanity given in blood. It is such pious selfishness and may be Freud’s ideas in ‘Id’. Dayadhvam means sympathy and emphasis of you. Always presses our self. It may be sorrow and suffering of others and come out your isolation into other and psychology has to ‘Ego’ of men. Damyata means that self control, divinity, humanity, spirituality, love, passionate of desire. And it may be ‘superego’ superior of world and no any desire of this stage of men life. And we see that Eliot gives images of humanity at soul and body. May be superpower and unconsciousness of human mind. At Freud theory and psyche of Eliot life reflected in poem and how he wrote to poem no any reality see to properly. But look that close reading and different approach in found Eliot in the poem.

- Conclusion
So we conclude that The waste land
poem has modern epic poem. In poem we found that Eliot personal life bad
experiences and relationship of his wife. And how humanity, love, death, life,
religious, myths, intellectual person see in poem. And how read to poem in
different context gives new images. And psychological context in Eliot life
itself here. As may perspective of this example like that: Arjun and Krishna told to ‘Bhagwadgeeta’. it is The
Wasteland and Krishna’s personal life, humanity, religious morality and
spirituality of them. so that's why he told to Bhagwadgeeta. And we see this morality and spiritual thing in the waste land found that.
